How should I prepare for an MUN conference?
There are three key steps to be prepared for an MUN conference. First is to research your country: is your country a democracy or a dictatorship, what are the current policies related to agenda items, which countries are you allied with. Second is to research the agenda items: what is the issue, who is affected, what are the previous UN actions and resolutions. Third is to write a position paper: it is always better to articulate your country’s stance concretely on paper.
What is a position paper, and do I need to write one?
Position paper is the document which states your country’s or representation’s standpoint at given agenda item. The chairboard will decide whether the delegate will submit a position paper or not and will let you know when the date gets closer.

DURING THE CONFERENCE
What is the general structure of an MUN session?
Basically each committee follows a structured process being:
Roll Call: The chairboard calls out representation names and the delegates state that they are “Present” or “Present and Voting”. “Present and Voting” phrase means that the delegate cannot stay abstain during voting procedure.
Setting the Agenda: Delegates give motion to set the agenda item by prosposing which topic to discuss. A simple majority vote determines the agenda item
General Speaker’s List (GSL): The committee starts with the General Speaker’s List where delegates can deliver their speeches regardless of the determined discussion topics. Delegates will deliver their opening speeches during this part. Also do not forget to yield the floor to the chair when you complete your speech in GSL.
Moderated & Unmoderated Caucuses: In Moderated Caucuses delegates negotiate on a specific aspect of the topic in a structured debate. Chairboard give say to delegates that they decide. In Unmoderated Caucuses on the other hand the delegates are free to speak upon the topic in general without interrupting other delegates’ speechs.
Drafting & Merging Working Papers: Delegates collaborate to draft working papers. These working papers are reviewed by the chairboard and delegates try to merge similar opinions into draft resolutions.
Resolution Debate & Amendments: Draft resolution introduced to committee. Delegates can propose amendments. Amendments may require voting if all sponsors do not agree upon the amendment.
Voting Procedure: Once the resolution have been introduced the committee enters voting procedure. The committee vote on Draft Resolutions or Amendments or Division of the Question. The chairboard may decide different voting methods such as Acclamation, Placard Voting and Roll-Call Voting. In most General Assembly committess require simple majority to pass resolutions. However some special committees such as Security Council require two-thirds majority to pass. Additionally in Security Council, Permanent Five (P5) member countries USA, UK, France, China, Russia can veto any substantive resolution.
How do I deliver an opening speech?
During the first official session’s General Speaker’s List you will have the floor according to the alphabetical order. When you have the floor you will greet the chairboard and the committee and then stand your point regarding agenda best handicrafts items. Once you conclude your speech you have to yield the floor to the chairboard in order to turn back to your seat.
